Welcome to The Homeschool Collective! Our vibrant community offers homeschool families multiple locations, on different days, each with their own set of weekly classes from which to choose! Classes are found on the day tabs at the top. Please first read about our fees and policies under the Fees tab, to better understand those details, as well as the About Us tab, for our stance on diversity, sick policy and more, to be sure we are a good fit for your family. Please use the Registration Form found on the "More" tab above to begin enrollment. Parents are welcome to enroll their children in 1 or more drop-off classes. Fees are pay per class, for the term. Once a class becomes full, a waitlist will be started. You will be notified by the email you list on your Registration Form, about class status. You may need to check your spam folder for our email. Please read about our class philosophy on the About Us Page, under the "More" tab above. We believe in the benefits of mixed age classrooms and acknowledge skills and concepts as a continuum of learning. Elementary classes include a range of activities, skills, and extension lessons in place to support all learning styles and levels. Some classes are listed as Elem/Middle or Middle/High, for a wider range of ages, and will be tailored to the majority age range. Please stay to assist your child as needed if they are struggling with completing activities, or having difficulty coping within this structured classroom environment. Also consider a partial schedule, as learning to cope in social settings can be exhausting at any age. Our minimum age on Mondays is 7yo, due to length of classes, readiness levels for structured activities, and number of students. Wednesdays & Thursdays may offer PreK/K classes for 4-6yos, and possible inclusion of ready 6yos to Elementary level classes. You are asked to supervise your child on the grounds when they are not in class. As well, a small snack between classes is advised if a child cannot wait until their schedule is finished. Masks are welcome but not required. We ask that all families stay home when recovering from illness, or wear masks when questionable, to respect the health of all families and tutors, and honor our diversity of comfort levels. PreK-5 year olds are welcome to play together outside under parent supervision.

Pretend Town: Readiness Skills Fun!

9:30-10:20am Ages 4-6

Students will have fun exploring in Pretend Town! Where is your favorite place to go? The library? Post office? Fire station? Students will be engaged in read alouds, crafts, and pretend play while learning about places around town. Kelsey Ray earned her Elementary Education degree from York College of Pennsylvania in 2013. She has 7 years of teaching experience with Pre-K and Kindergarteners. She lives in Gettysburg with her husband, Devin and her son, Emerson. In her spare time, she enjoys being outside, scrapbooking, and baking. Class Fee: $60

Fall Into Autumn with Stories & Games

10:30-11:20pm Ages 4-6

Students will use their senses to explore the season of autumn. Each lesson will include a seasonal read aloud and related hands-on activities. Students will learn about all things fall: apples, leaves, pumpkins, and more! Kelsey Ray earned her Elementary Education degree from York College of Pennsylvania in 2013. She has 7 years of teaching experience with Pre-K and Kindergarteners. She lives in Gettysburg with her husband, Devin and her son, Emerson. Science Explorers

11:30-12:20pm Ages 4-6

Calling all junior scientists! Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dive into a world of splashes, fizzes, and surprises. In this hands-on class, we'll ask the big questions little scientists love to explore: Will it sink? Will it float? And yes... can we actually make something explode?! Every week, we'll test, guess, giggle, and get a little messy while we discover how the world around us really works. From fizzy volcano eruptions to floating boats and sinking stones, every experiment is a chance to touch, splash, and explore science with our own two hands. Katie is a mother of 5 with a master's degree in nursing leadership, with a background in emergency nursing and urgent care. She has taught various science courses at several local co-ops, and enjoys working with young minds to engage with the world around them! When she’s not teaching, working, or running a restaurant, Katie loves camping with her family, and relaxing with a good book. Class Fee: $60

Preschool & Kinder prep program:

We are so excited to welcome families to our new Kinder Prep Program!!

Ages 4-6, kids will work at their ability, practicing our foundation goals of reading and math readiness through play, as well as social-emotional wellbeing.
Every age and stage welcome!

Adults to remain on Property, and welcome in room, participating or observing.

Parents must be available to help their child with bathroom needs and emotional support. Gradual separation is encouraged, once child feels safe and comfortable.

Treasure Seekers: A Creative Self Awareness Class

9:30-10:20am Ages 7-9

We are Seeking Treasures! The treasures of our Big Emotions! Using nature analogies and a variety of art mediums, we’ll explore our mountainous terrain of emotions and how to regulate them. In this Creative Awareness class students will learn how to cultivate healthy roots, calm our Emotion Ocean, and make some lovely art in the process. Amy Rich is an Art therapist coach that loves to work with children, creating a magical reality that helps our kids get and stay Creative. Amy runs her own business, Fragmented Rainbows, offering group art therapy workshops for all ages, as well as at the YWCA. She is excited to now share her talents with our homeschoolers! Class fee: $65 ($55 + $10 for supplies)

Stories & Writing with Froggy & Pete the Cat

10:30-11:20pm Ages 7-10

Gather 'round for laughter and learning, as we join forces with the ever-popular Froggy and Pete the Cat! Froggy with his endearing humble honesty and Pete's musical rhythm stories that focus on positivity and friendship-- both promote trying hard, having a good attitude, and being "groovy"! Their antics and positivity set a great stress-free atmosphere for practicing our writing skills and creativity. Together we'll read one of their adventures, then work together at all stages of learning, to write and draw, connecting to the story, its message, and our own ideas. All ages and stages of early writing and spelling are welcome, as I guide and encourage each student at their own pace. This is the perfect mix of fun, ethics, friendship, and writing development. Julia Hancock has been teaching students for 25 years, with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary and Middle School Education, Math & Science concentrations, a Master's in School Counseling, and certifications in early childhood education, music, and the Montessori method. Inspired by music, writing, and nature, she brings energy and a creative spirit to the learning process. For the last eight years Julia has enjoyed homeschooling with her daughter and offering many clubs and classes to their local homeschool community. Class Fee: $60

Discovery Lab: Science Experiments

11:30-12:20am Ages 7-9

Students will learn to think like scientists by making predictions, conducting experiments, recording observations, and explaining results in kid-friendly language. Each lesson will feature hands-on experiments using simple household materials. Junior scientists will explore chemical reactions, density investigations, weather experiments, and more! Get Moving!

1-1:30pm Ages 6-9 (after lunch)

Get Moving: Let’s get those bodies moving and grooving with fun outdoor activities like kickball, wiffle ball, and more. We’ll even play some crossing the midline activities to help those brains develop even more connections! This fun outdoor activity class is full of opportunities for exercise and brain body connections. Instructor Melissa Ring has experience substituting in elementary gym classes, coaching TBall and Soccer for little ones, and as a Teaching Assistant in a Montessori-Public blended school environment. She has enjoyed homeschooling her daughters over the years and offering classes to The Homeschool Collective community! Class Fee: $45

Intro to Spanish : Vocab Fun with Games & Songs

9:30-10:20am Ages 9-15

Te gusta la piscina? La playa? Whether you like the pool or the beach, come learn to say it in Spanish! Have fun learning your first words with cards, games, and songs! Each week students will explore a different theme, like town, animals, numbers, etc. We'll even begin to put them into simple sentences! Vamos! Geography: States and Capitals

10:30-11:20am Ages 9-12

In this class students will gain knowledge of the United States. As our children’s world gets smaller, the chances are greater that they will contact people from other states. Although we are all one country, each state and region have distinct characteristics. Not only will we be learning the States and Capitals we will also learn what sets them apart from others. We will be chunking the states into smaller regions. Each student will receive an independent learning packet for each region. It includes spelling skills using the state name, map coloring, identifying the state on a map, and some fun extras. I like to use visualization and connection as a tool for memorizing. I will be teaching visualization techniques while teaching about the states. For example, Vermont is shaped like a “V,” Louisiana is shaped like an “L,” Massachusetts looks as though it is kicking England away, the lower part of Michigan looks like a “mitten.” and so on. We will also be putting facts to music as a great way to memorize! I can sing every word to our favorite childhood songs, but I can’t remember what I had for dinner last night! I will introduce my students to some great songs to help them learn the States and Capitals easier. And let’s not forget about Games such as “Go Fish,” “Memory,” or “Trivia”. These are fun games to help students gain knowledge and interest in the States and Capitals. We will dedicate the last couple minutes of each class to play a fun States and Capitals game. Jessica Homan is a Spiritual Mentor, Author, Artist, Poet and a proud Homeschool Mama. She loves to use her talents to inspire her clients and students to live intentional lifestyles. Jessica lives with her husband and three teenage children, where she loves swimming, gardening, meditation and being alone in nature. During the summer months she travels to the shore, as nothing makes her feel more at peace and grounded than wading in the healing energies of natural salt water. Class Fee: $65

Art Projects: 2D & 3D

11:30-12:20pm Ages 9-12

In this super fun art class we'll be transitioning from 2D art into 3D art, discussing what is meant by shape and form, and doing an artist study on Monet. We will be using materials like paper collage, oil pastel, chalk pastel, crayon/marker, and watercolor. Students will learn/review the language of shapes, learn how to blend colors and tint, and begin to push two dimensional images into three dimensions. This class will be all hands-on and each student will get to bring home plenty of art for the fridge! Beth Shaw has been creating art since she was naught but knee high to a grasshopper. In school she especially liked art that she could do with her hands. After she graduated college she made her own business designing and building historically accurate clothing for Plays, Renaissance Faires, and Reenactors. She was a costumer for 15 years and in 2020 got back into traditional art and began painting landscapes. Her next task may be to paint what she sees in her gardens, blending her love of herbs and plants with acrylics and watercolors! Beth also homeschools her son and is excited to offer her first classes for our community! Class Fee: $60

Forensic Anthropology

9:30-10:20am Ages 12-16

Although Forensic Anthropology is not what you see on TV (investigators going to crime scenes and analyzing clues), it IS how many missing persons cases get solved! Cases that have very little evidence -- except for bones. A Forensic anthropologist analyzes skeletal material in order to make a basic profile of who the skeleton was. In this class students will learn basic anatomical terms, skeletal anatomy, identification methodology, and some basic criminal investigation methods. We will also cover a preliminary look at some of the ways forensic anthropologists can help in archaeology. Hi I'm Stephen Nell! I was homeschooled my whole life before starting college, and I am now a senior in college working for a bachelors of science in anthropology, with around one semester of work before I finish my degree. I have always been fascinated by questions of the human past, and that is what eventually drew me to anthropology, and now teaching. Ideas of human behavior I believe are some of the most important to study, as they enable us to better our understanding of ourselves, as well as others. I am also a cellist, which has allowed me to have participated in multiple orchestras, and have taken classes with some amazing musicians. I believe in an applied, multidisciplinary approach to learning. I have always found that when I have been asked to apply the information I am studying, I come away with a much better understanding of it. I also have found that experience with multiple different fields of study always ends with a better understanding of underlying core concepts that would otherwise not have come to light. I hope that in taking my classes you will come to share my fascination with the nature of humanity, and can learn to apply the concepts I teach you to any field you end up pursuing. Class Fee: $ 70

Essay Writing Workshop

(English/Composition)

10:30-11:20am Ages 12-16

Don’t be fooled! Essay writing can be fun and simple when you know the steps for success! In this class we will focus on the different types of essays and standard essay writing rules for middle and high schoolers. Together students will learn to build a cohesive essay following MLA guidelines. Students will be working on a team essay with Teacher guidance for comprehension during class, and weekly homework assignments should be turned in for review and feedback from the Teacher. This class is appropriate for both beginners and moderately experienced essay writers. Instructor Melissa Ring brings together her years of homeschooling experience and her public school teaching assistant experience, to offer classes for homeschoolers that bring the best of both worlds together. Melissa is a professional photographer and runs her own local studio. She has enjoyed homeschooling her daughters over the years and offering classes to The Homeschool Collective community! Class Fee: $70

'Zine Making & Poetry

11:30-12:20pm Ages 12-17

In this class we will be learning the history behind zines. The small, independently-produced publications that began to emerge in the 1930s and became more widespread in the 1970s. Zines are typically created by a single person or a small group of people, and are often photocopied and distributed by hand or through the mail. Zines often have a DIY (do-it-yourself) aesthetic and cover a wide range of topics, including art, politics, music, and personal experiences. In this class students will create their own zines, with different layouts. We will also come together and create one as a group. This project will allow us to share our perspectives and experiences, as a way for the group to express themselves and connect with others who have similar interests. Lastly we will be reading poetry zines, while learning how to write a poem that can be incorporated in their own personal zine to be given out to friends family and the community. This class will go from creation to publication and everything in between. Come join the zine movement and learn what all the hype is about. Theatre: Acting and Drama

(Arts)

1pm-1:45pm Ages 12-16

In this class, we will be learning the basics of acting and how to create characters in drama. In session one our focus will be to develop our individual inventory of character traits, then we will bring some of these traits to two person scenes, and finally, a monologue. We will learn stage direction terms, how to project, ideas for character development, and close reading of the text to find clues to mood and action. This class is going to be a lot of noise, a lot of movement, and a lot of fun! Next session we will build off of this one with comedy so be sure to get this foundation class under your belt! Beth Shaw currently holds two BAs in Acting and English Literature with a focus on Medieval and Renaissance Lit and Performance. She has years of experience teaching various aspects of performance: singing, choreography, acting, and loves it all! "In my opinion, acting is the best way to understand other people and to open your mind to their worlds. It’s all about the human condition, baby!" Class Fee: $65
